How to use a Taxi?

What one should take into account when taking a taxi. Tips and a bit of Insider-Knowledge for our Taxi-Customers:

How to recognise a Frankfurt-Taxi?

Frankfurt´s taxis can be recognised by their ivory-white colour and the mandatory roof sign with the word "TAXI" readable from the front and rear of the vehicle. Furthermore a taxi which is ready for service must prominently display its city licence number on the bottom right of the rear window of the vehicle. This form of distinguishing characterisation depends on the state and community involved and is not mandatory in all parts of Germany.

How to recognise whether a Taxi is occupied?

Occupied taxis and those which are not available for service indicate this by switching off the illumination of their taxi roof sign.

How to find taxi ranks (cab ranks) in Frankfurt am Main?

The city of Frankfurt has approximately 150 designated taxi ranks, among others at the main railroad station, at the trade fair grounds and the airport. You can recognise taxi ranks by the yellow pilasters.

Are you allowed to flag down a passing taxi?

Yes, in Germany and of course in Frankfurt one may flag down a passing taxi. As long as other road users are not endangered or any laws broken, a taxi driver may drive to the kerb to take up a customer.

What factors influence your fare?

Frankfurt´s taxi entrepreneurs and drivers are bound by the city´s published tariffs. The fares charged are calculated according to the distance travelled, the time taken and the time of the day. If more than four persons travel in a suitably licensed taxi a surcharge will be taken. An abbreviated version of the tariffs must be prominently displayed in the taxi. You will find further information under Customers, Taxi Tariffs.

Must one always take the first taxi at the rank?

No, you may always freely choose the taxi in which you wish to drive. As an example non smoker cars and Service Taxis are made recognisable by appropriate stickers on the vehicle or its windows. In the aforementioned the taxi driver is also forbidden to smoke. Taxis which offer non-cash systems for payment of the fare indicate this with appropriate stickers in the rear side windows showing the icons of the accepted companies. One should, however, consider that the first car in line has been waiting longest for a customer!

Are taxis available with safety seats/retention systems for children?

Yes, in Frankfurt a number of taxis offer safety seats for children. While booking please refer to the fact that you require a safety seat for a child. According to German traffic law, children with a body length of under 150 centimetres (approx. 60 inches) must be secured by an adequate seat while travelling by car. It is not however, compulsory for a taxi driver to carry along such a seat. For this reason we ask your indulgence if a taxi driver requests you to use another taxi because he does not have a safety seat for children. Portable baby cribs and safety systems suitable for small children with a body weight under 15 kg must be provided by the parents themselves.

Are tips compulsory?

In Germany a tip is a voluntary payment for good to excellent service. This also applies to the Taxi Trade. Tips are not part of the Taxi Tariffs. Nevertheless every taxi driver will be pleased to receive a tip commensurate to the service rendered. In case of payment using non-cash systems it is also possible to allow a tip.

Is the use of seatbelts compulsory?

Yes! Germany´s traffic legislation also applies to suburban and commuter traffic. This legislation makes the use of seat belts compulsory for all drivers and co-drivers in a car, and these include taxis.

Whom to ask in case of losing something in a taxi.

Taxi drivers are required to report and give up lost or forgotten articles at the appropriate lost-property office of the community. You will find further information under Customers, Lost and Found.

Obtrusive taxi drivers in Frankfurt am Main?

Frankfurt´s Taxi Ordinance forbids a taxi driver to verbally solicit potential clients in order to gain a fare.

Must one tolerate a taxi driver´s bad manners or conduct?

No, you should not accept bad manners or poor conduct. Frankfurt´s Taxi Trade wishes to offer its customers the best possible service. Unfortunately we also have a few black sheep. So as to be able to discipline these we request you to report unfriendly and discourteous drivers. These and other complaints should be addressed to the Complaints-Investigation-Committee of TF eG. For further information refer to Customers, Complaints.

Can you pay without cash in Frankfurt´s taxis?

In general yes! There are still unfortunately a number of the approximately 1700 taxis in the city of Frankfurt, who do not accept non-cash systems of payment, whether they be client-cards, credit-cards or the EC-card. Taxis which accept non-cash payment indicate this by stickers applied to the right rear window of their vehicle showing registered symbols such as VISA, EC-Card and others. You should also indicate your choice of the preferred method of payment when ordering your taxi, be it a client-card or a credit-card.

Are taxi drivers obliged to carry luggage and other heavy objects?

No, according to the regulatory ordinance (BOKraft), the client is responsible for the stowing and supervision of his luggage to the extent that this luggage may not endanger the safety or regular operation of the taxi. This also applies to the transportation of animals. Our taxi drivers however, will where possible happily assist you with the stowing and unloading of your luggage.

Are taxi drivers obliged to transport animals?

Frankfurt´s Taxi Ordinance requires that guide dogs for the blind accompanying a blind person must always be transported. Other than this, it is the taxi driver´s decision whether to accept the transportation of animals other than guide dogs.
